Seaborn Hensley Lunsford and Martie Francis Burden

Seaborn Hensley Lunsford was born to James Martin Lunsford and Josephine Ann Thomason on 16 March 1882.  He married Martie Francis Burden on 27 December 1908.  He was a farmer by occupation and a member of the Woodmen of the World.  He died 17 January 1967 and is buried in the Hillcrest Cemetery in Bowman, Georgia.

The Lunsford family was not wealthy, financially, and were primarily farmers.  They farmed peanuts and corn.  While education was important, they did not all finish school.  They had to work.  They lived in Rock Branch until their youngest daughter, Sallie, was eleven.  If they killed or had a hog, they used every part of the hog, nothing wasted. So much that they even used the bladder as a ball for their games.

Seab, Seaborn’s preferred name, was on the Board of Trustees for Cooley School (1906 or 1916) and was also on the Board for Rack Branch School in 1924 or 1925, although credit not recognized.[1]  The speculation was that one of the members did not want to acknowledge him because he didn’t “bend” the way she wanted.

To Seaborn and Martie were born 11 children, Unnamed Daughter, Henry Haley, Beulah Ann, Estelle Cornelia, Hester Morris, Dorothy Nell, Infant Son, Lindsey Martin, Mary Jane, Annie Ruth, and Sallie Crosswhite. 

Funeral of Martie Francis Burden Lunsford

The minister as Reverend Jackson Speer.  The singers were Mrs. Paul Burden, Truman Maxwell, Henry Cole and L. Adger Moore. They sang The Unclouded Day Near to the Heart of God with pianist Mrs. John Duncan.

“Mrs. Lunsford lived for others.  She was grateful, kind and thoughtful, living for her children, grandchildren, family and friends.”[2]
